What is Involved with Teeth Whitening Treatment?

Jan 25 • 1 minute read

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic procedure that addresses discolored teeth by lifting stains. This treatment can greatly improve an individual's aesthetic appearance without time-consuming, invasive procedures.

Preparation

Before a brighter smile can be achieved, it is imperative to establish proper dental health. During a consultation, your smile will be examined to see if there’s anything that needs to be treated first. Teeth whitening will not be effective when decay or other issues are present.

After your oral health has been evaluated, preparation for whitening treatment will consist of photographs taken of your teeth to help monitor the progression. Your dentist will examine and discuss with you the causes of stains.

Excess build-up of bacteria, food particles, and other substances will be removed to make way for treatment.

The Whitening Process

Your dentist will apply a substance that covers and protects the gums so that the bleaching solution will coat only the visible portion of your smile. This safe solution usually includes hydrogen peroxide as the whitening agent. Depending on the whitening product, sometimes a curing light or laser activates the peroxide until the desired shade is achieved. Teeth are then rinsed and a fluoride application is used to combat tooth sensitivity.

What are the Benefits?

No matter how comfortable an individual is with their appearance, they will most likely agree that having a brighter smile is appealing. Unfortunately, time and diet, as well as certain oral habits, can contribute to consistent staining. Luckily, professional teeth whitening is a convenient, painless, and lasting resolution. After the first whitening appointment, it’s easy to get touch-ups on any stains that return.

A brighter smile can instill positive changes in your attitude and make a great first impression.
